Rafael Matos and Marcelo Melo advanced to their second doubles final in as many weeks with their victory Friday at the Rio Open presented by Claro. After falling just short in Buenos Aires, the Brazilians now have a chance to make amends on home soil.
The unseeded duo earned a 6-7(3), 6-3, 10-5 result against Luciano Darderi and Mariano Navone. It was their second Match Tie-break win of the week after they knocked off fourth seed Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram in a decider in the opening round.
The Brazilians won 63 per cent of points on their opponents' second serves, according to Infosys ATP Stats, helping them create nine break chances in the one-hour, 44-minute match. They converted three of those nine break points while saving three of four break points on their own serve.
Matos/Melo will face Pedro Martinez and Jaume Munar in Saturday's final after the Spaniards upset third-seeded Frenchmen Sadio Doumbia and Fabien Reboul 6-4, 6-3 on Friday.
At the Qatar ExxonMobil Open in Doha, an all-British doubles final is on tap for Saturday. Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski booked their place in the title match with a 3-6, 6-3, 10-5 upset of second seeds Harri Heliovaara and Henry Patten on Friday, while Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool were 7-6(3), 6-3 winners against Ivan Dodig and Yuki Bhambri.
