The entry list of tennis players who will compete in the qualifying of the 11th edition of the Rio Open presented by Claro was released this Monday by the ATP. The competition, which will take place on February 15-16 at the Jockey Club Brasileiro, will feature former champion Laslo Djere, Brazilians Thiago Monteiro and João Lucas Reis, as well as other prominent names in clay court tennis, determining four spots in the main singles draw of the ATP 500 event. More information regarding the free ticket distribution for the qualifying will be announced soon.
Serbian Laslo Djere, the 2019 Rio Open champion, and Brazilian Thiago Monteiro, who had his breakthrough at the tournament by defeating Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, then ranked 9th, in the 2016 edition, are the main highlights of the list. Argentine Federico Coria, Indian Sumit Nagal, and German Yannick Hanfmann also appear on the list, as well as João Lucas Reis, who secured his spot after winning the Procopio Cup.
The singles qualifying draw consists of 16 players competing for the last four spots. Thirteen players earn direct entry through the rankings, while the remaining three spots are wild cards, already including João Lucas Reis. Two additional wild cards will be announced later on.
The players who win two matches will advance to the main draw of the Rio Open, which will feature World No.2 Alexander Zverev from Germany, Danish Holger Rune, ranked 12th, Olympic medalist Lorenzo Musetti, rising star and new top 100 player João Fonseca, and others. The main draw will take place on February 17-23.
